If the lesion appears as a reddened area that bleeds there is a good chance that you have thrush. On top of that the dentist can perform a microscopic examination to have a better diagnostic. If the condition is more serious and the thrush as spread to the oesophagus more test will be needed to make a proper diagnosis.
